Docusign Envelope ID: 3D6AC004-ED28-4146-9416-DAA34E373F8A WHEREAS, Michael Chang is a pioneering leader in advancing civic, social, and political engagement among Asian Americans; WHEREAS, he was the first Asian American to serve as Mayor of Cupertino and is a widely respected Silicon Valley civic leader, with nearly 20 years of service in elected office; WHEREAS, Michael chaired De Anza College’s Asian and Asian American Studies Department and continues to serve as an emeritus professor of civic leadership; WHEREAS, he founded the Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute (APALI) in 1997 and has grown the organization into a nationally recognized, nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to developing Asian American civic leaders; WHEREAS, he has been honored with the De Anza College President’s Award, Stanford University’s AAPI Alumni of the Year, and the California State Assembly’s Educator of the Year award; and WHEREAS, in recognition of his exceptional service and dedication to community well-being, he is receiving the 2026 Avenidas Lifetimes of Achievement Award, honoring his lifetime of contributions.
