Williams, County Executive Dana Reed, Director of Emergency Management SUBJECT: NWS StormReady Recognition RECOMMENDED ACTION Adopt Proclamation recognizing and affirming the National Weather Service's “StormReady” recognition of the County of Santa Clara. (Office of the County Executive) FISCAL IMPLICATIONS There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended action. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION On March 18, 2026, the National Weather Service (NWS) assessed and subsequently recognized the County of Santa Clara as StormReady®, an official NWS recognition. This is noteworthy because Santa Clara County faces unique weather challenges with its diverse geography from a coastal mountain range to a large valley floor as well as the San Francisco Bay coastline and inland mountains. Across the county the specific micro-climates and weather vulnerabilities require tailored preparedness and response strategies.           PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF SANTA CLARA RECOGNIZING AND AFFIRMING NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE’S STORMREADY RECOGNITION WHEREAS, being part of a Weather-Ready Nation is about preparing our community for increasing vulnerability to extreme weather and water events, with NWS recognizing that 98 percent of all Presidentially declared disasters are weather-related; WHEREAS, NWS created the StormReady® program to help arm communities with the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property—before, during, and after an event—using clear-cut guidelines for emergency managers on how to improve operations during hazardous weather; WHEREAS, StormReady® guidelines include: 1) having a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center, 2) offering multiple methods of receiving and broadcasting severe weather warnings and forecasts, 3) creating a system that monitors hazardous weather for public safety, 4) promoting the importance of public readiness through presentations and outreach, 5) developing a formal plan for hazardous weather, including training severe weather spotters and holding...
