County of Santa Clara Office of the Sheriff 129959 DATE: August 11, 2026 TO: Board of Supervisors FROM: Robert Jonsen, Sheriff SUBJECT: Appropriation Modification related to Adding Sixteen Deputy Sheriffs and Four Sheriff’s Sergeant RECOMMENDED ACTION Approve Request for Appropriation Modification No. 15 - $4,686,212 increasing estimated revenue and expenditure appropriations in the Office of the Sheriff budget, relating to adding 16 Deputy Sheriffs and four Sheriff's Sergeant positions for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) supplemental law enforcement services. (4/5 Vote) FISCAL IMPLICATIONS Approval of this action would increase the Office of the Sheriff’s salaries and benefits budget by $4,686,212 in FY 2026–27 and by $5,664,505 in FY 2027–28. The FY 2026–27 costs are fully offset by increased revenue. In FY 2027–28, the costs are covered mostly by increased revenue and a small reduction to other Object 1 expenses. The ongoing cost of approximately $5,664,505 is subject to change when the FY 2027-2028 benefit rates are updated.
