On May 1, 1886, hundreds of thousands ofU. S. workers went on strike, leading to conflict and consequences that triggered global solidarity and an annual day of action on May 1'\ WHEREAS, in 2026, the Labor Council is serving as a host for other interested parties such as the San Jose May Day Coalition, Aztec dance circles from Santa Clara County, and community advocates that promote and advance dignity and respect for all workers; WHEREAS, begun as a march in support of local immigrant and labor rights, this year is the 20 th anniversary of El Gigante, the largest organized demonstration in San Jose, as well as the 140th anniversary of the inaugural 1886 march in Chicago; and WHEREAS, San Jose May Day recognizes the intersection of labor and immigrant rights and the Labor Council seeks to further this partnership to benefit all workers in Santa Clara County and beyond, strengthening the impact of both movements.
